The Baltimore Business Journal (BBJ) is a subset of American City Business Journals (ACBJ), a publishing company with 43 business journals across the country, covering business news and topics in the Baltimore metropolitan area. I design and facilitate the BBJ’s weekly print edition, along with periodical special sections, that reach about 6,000 of the Charm City’s business elite.

The Sun Sentinel is owned and operated by tronc, Inc. (formerly Tribune Publishing), a media group that also operates the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and Redeye, to name a few. The Sun Sentinel reaches 1.5 million readers a week, with distribution in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. There, I created the weekly Showtime cover, the weekly food section, maps, graphics and various illustrations. Occasionally, I did some multi-media work, creating interactive maps.

Campus Recreation services all student recreation programs, including Intramural and Club Sports, Men’s Ice Hockey and Outdoor Pursuits, and six facilities. I design posters, promotional books, facility signage and advertisements while serving as a liaison between Communications Specialists, Social Media Specialists and two Design Assistants, whom I supervise.

Ohio University’s only fashion magazine. Thread publishes two times a semester, with each designer taking on one story. I usually took on two to three stories. (I was very eager!)



Society for News Design Award of Excellence, 41st Best of News
Design Competition

For the BBJ’s “Navigating Baltimore” two-part series on transportation and how it drives economic prosperity. According the SND, an Award of Excellence “is granted for truly excellent work, going beyond mere technical or aesthetic competency. It honors outstanding entries for such things as being daring and innovative, even if they are less than 100 percent in every respect. Judges were asked to be tough, but fair.” The project won two awards, one in the Cover Story, Business category and one in the Editor’s Choice, Local category.

Maryland, Delaware, DC Press Association’s Designer of the Year (2019)
For my body of work in the 2018, I was recognized as “Designer of the Year.” BBJ Editor-in-Chief Joanna Sullivan submitted the nomination for the award. According to the judge Adam Marton of the University of Maryland, “[Peterson’s] use of type, image and composition really stands out.” I was very surprised and did not expect to be nominated, nor win. MDDC’s Editorial Contest 2019
My division, (Non-daily, circulation under 10,000) I swept my category, winning first and second in all five categories, including Page 1 Design and News-Driven Informational Graphics. Additionally, I won several Best-of-Show awards (all-divisions). Some of my winning projects include “Not Your Grandma’s McCormick” and “Maryland Overdosed.”

Society for Professional Journalists Sunshine State Awards – Best Front Page Design (Large)
July 2017
In combination with myself, my editor David Shutz and design colleague Lillian Mayor, The Sun Sentinel won Best Front Page Design (Large) for our 2017 election coverage. The paper also won second and third place in the same category for the Orlando Pulse Shooting and overall front page design. Check out the list here.

Charles L. Scott Endowed Scholarship is a $500 scholarship awarded to one student in each field of Visual Communication (Print Design, Web Design, Commercial Photography and Photojournalism) for excellence in Ohio University’s Visual Communication program. The scholarship is presented by Charles L. Scott, a co-founder of the Visual Communication program at Ohio University.
